[1] What is the story behind MAGIC PRESS?
MAGIC PRESS was born from a simple question: why does the same rubber feel different every time you change it?
I am the founder of KSY Lab. I have always been a table tennis enthusiast, having won many awards and participated in numerous international competitions. In my table tennis team, there are several partners who have very high standards for gluing rubber, and we often discuss it together. It is precisely this hands-on experience and these exchanges that have given me a much deeper understanding of blade performance and the subtle changes in feel than the average player.
For years, I have changed my own rubbers. But every time I changed a rubber, using the same steps and the same glue, the playing feel was never the same -- sometimes good, sometimes not. Only I myself could tell. This was somewhat manageable with Japanese and European rubbers, which are consistent in quality, but the variation was greater with Chinese rubbers. Moreover, some Chinese rubbers vary in quality themselves; if you combine that with inconsistent gluing technique, the results become even more unpredictable and the feel even less reliable.
Even more frustrating: a roller cannot apply even pressure. When using booster, the whole rubber expands; without sufficient pressure, the rubber simply won't stick firmly. As for wooden press tools, they warp from moisture within months, screws rust, and eventually they end up in the trash.
I realised the core problem was not technique -- it was the tool. Available rubber-changing tools are either roller-type (they stretch the rubber and cannot apply uniform pressure) or wooden (they easily warp from moisture). And none of them let you see whether the pressure is even.
So I decided to build my own.
But a good tool is never right the first time. The MAGIC PRESS you see now is the fifth version. The four previous versions revealed issues during real-world testing, and each was corrected one by one -- from material selection and spring compression ratio, to screw-slot engagement precision, to the placement of the bubble level and steel ruler. Every detail was repeatedly refined. The current version incorporates all those lessons and is the most mature, most stable design to date.
The design philosophy of MAGIC PRESS is simple: changing rubbers should be a precise craft, not a lucky guess. We replaced traditional wood with a 10 mm thick clear acrylic platform, replaced the roller with five screws that apply pressure simultaneously, and added a bubble level and steel ruler so you can see the pressure distribution. The five screws apply even pressure, completely solving the problem of the rubber coming loose due to expansion -- even when booster is used, the whole rubber stays firmly bonded. Whether you use consistent Japanese/European rubbers or the more variable Chinese rubbers, MAGIC PRESS delivers the same feel every time: precise bite, total control.

Unlike traditional roller tools, MAGIC PRESS uses a five-screw simultaneous pressing system, together with a bubble level and steel ruler, to ensure consistent, repeatable, and quantifiable pressure every time you change a rubber.

Traditional roller tools stretch the rubber as they roll back and forth, causing distortion and uneven tension, which leads to inconsistent feel. MAGIC PRESS applies uniform static pressure with five screws across the entire blade -- no stretching, no guesswork, fully quantifiable.

[5] Does MAGIC PRESS accommodate all blade thicknesses and shapes?
Yes. The SWU aluminium alloy springs have a 60% compression ratio, accommodating all blade thicknesses -- from 4 mm thin blades to thick one-ply hinoki and carbon offensive blades. It also fits all blade shapes, including standard round, square, and special shapes like hexagon and octagon. It works with all types of rubbers (Chinese, Japanese, European). |

[6] How do I use MAGIC PRESS?
Just five simple steps:
1. Glue -- Use the back of the tool as a gluing platform. Secure the rubber and apply glue evenly. The recessed grooves prevent the rubber from shifting.
2. Cut -- Flip the tool over. Use the cutting platform and cutting mat to trim the rubber to size.
3. Press & adjust -- Place blade and rubber into the press, between the two acrylic plates. Evenly tighten the five screws while watching the bubble level and steel ruler. Adjust to your preferred pressure mark.
4. Let it sit overnight -- Allow the glue to fully cure for the best bond.
5. Test & play -- Remove the blade and enjoy the same reliable feel every time.
[7] Do I need to put anything between the rubber and the acrylic plates before pressing?
Yes. Because the rubber is sticky, we strongly recommend placing a piece of paper (plain paper works fine) between the rubber surface and the acrylic plate before tightening the screws. This prevents the rubber from sticking to the acrylic during curing, especially if excess glue squeezes out. After the glue has cured overnight, simply peel off the paper -- your rubber surface will remain clean and undamaged.
[8] Why is the bubble not centred when pressing?
This is probably not a screw issue, but rather that your table is not level.
Correct procedure:
1. Check the table -- Place the empty MAGIC PRESS (without blade or rubber) on your table. Observe the bubble position. If it leans to one side, your table is not perfectly level. Remember that position -- this is your table's "reference".
2. Press with blade -- Put blade and rubber into the MAGIC PRESS and evenly tighten the five screws.
3. Compare to reference -- After tightening, check the bubble position. If it matches the reference you saw earlier, the pressure is even. Wherever the bubble was on your empty table, it should be the same after pressing.
The bubble level helps you judge whether pressure is even, not whether the tool is absolutely horizontal. As long as the bubble is in the same position as the table reference, the five screws are applying even pressure -- you do not need the bubble to be perfectly centred.
[9] Do I need to apply a specific pressure?
There is no fixed standard -- it is entirely a matter of personal preference. The steel ruler lets you record the pressure mark you like. Once you find the feel you love, simply tighten to the same mark every time to get perfectly consistent results.
[10] What if the pressure feels uneven or the adjustment is not smooth?
MAGIC PRESS is a fully mechanical modular tool. In most cases, this simply means a part has loosened during use. A quick full reassembly will restore it to factory-optimal condition. Follow these steps:
1. Disassemble -- Loosen all five screws and remove the lower acrylic plate, springs, upper acrylic plate, nylon washers, and handles.
2. Clean -- Wipe both acrylic plates and all metal parts with a dry cloth.
3. Reassemble -- Put parts back in the correct order (from top to bottom): handle > nylon washer > upper acrylic plate > spring > lower acrylic plate (with slots) > screw. Before tightening, make sure the square neck of each screw is properly seated into the slot of the lower acrylic plate.
4. Tighten & test -- Evenly tighten the five screws while watching the bubble level until you reach your desired pressure mark. This full reset restores the tool to its original state, ensuring "perfect consistency every time."
[11] What should I pay attention to when reassembling the screws? Could I damage the acrylic?
This is a critical step. MAGIC PRESS uses 304 stainless steel carriage bolts. Below the handle, each bolt has a square neck. That square part must precisely fit into the dedicated slot in the lower acrylic plate. When seated correctly, the square neck prevents the screw from spinning, ensuring smooth and stable pressure adjustment.
However, if you loosen the handle too much -- especially when disassembling or making large pressure adjustments -- the square neck can completely disengage from its slot. If you then tighten the screw without re-seating it, the misaligned screw will scrape and damage the acrylic slot.
To avoid this:
· Loosen gently -- Do not fully unscrew the handle unless you intend to completely disassemble the tool.
· Check alignment -- After loosening and before tightening, always verify that the square neck of every screw is correctly seated back into its slot in the lower acrylic plate.
· Tighten slowly -- Only after confirming all five screws are properly seated, tighten them evenly while watching the bubble level.
When used correctly, the carriage bolt and slot design ensures permanently smooth, reliable operation without damaging the acrylic. |

[12] Why is the nylon washer placed only between the handle and the upper acrylic plate, rather than adding one above and below each spring? Wouldn't that be smoother?
The answer is simple: if we added washers above and below each spring, you would not be able to clamp thin blades.
The correct position for the nylon washer is between the handle and the upper acrylic plate. It makes the handle turn more smoothly and protects the acrylic surface.
Why not make the springs smooth on both sides? Because each spring sits between the upper and lower acrylic plates. Our springs compress enough to close the gap down to as little as 4 mm -- thin enough to clamp a 4 mm blade. Adding washers above and below each spring would increase the minimum possible gap. As a result, a thin blade would sit loose even with the screws fully tightened.
So we place a single nylon washer at the handle only, and leave no washers above or below the springs -- this allows the MAGIC PRESS to clamp everything from 4 mm thin blades to 20 mm thick blades. This is not a cost-cutting measure; it is a deliberate design trade-off to ensure compatibility with all blade types. |

[13] How do I clean MAGIC PRESS?
After use, wipe the acrylic plates with a dry or slightly damp cloth. For metal parts (springs, screws), a dry cloth is sufficient.
Special note: The MAGIC PRESS surface uses laser printing. Avoid rubbing the printed areas vigorously (such as the product lifecycle diagram and the four different blade shape icons) to prevent fading. Do not use solvents or abrasive cleaners on the acrylic surfaces.
[14] Will the acrylic platform warp over time?
No. Unlike wooden tools that warp from moisture, the 10 mm thick acrylic platform is dimensionally stable and will remain perfectly flat forever. The SWU aluminium alloy springs and 304 stainless steel screws are also rust-proof, ensuring long-term reliability.
[15] Can I replace individual parts if needed in the future?
Absolutely. MAGIC PRESS is fully modular -- every part (springs, screws, nylon washers, acrylic plates) can be disassembled, cleaned, and replaced. Contact us to purchase spare parts.
[16] Will the nylon washers wear out?
The nylon washers are designed for long-term durability. They reduce friction between the handle and the upper acrylic plate, ensuring smooth adjustment while protecting the acrylic surface from wear. Under normal use, they should last as long as the tool itself.
[17] Do I need to replace the cutting blade?
MAGIC PRESS provides a stable cutting platform and cutting mat. The utility knife for cutting is user-supplied. We recommend using a sharp standard utility knife blade for best results. When the blade dulls, simply replace it with a standard blade -- no proprietary accessories are required.
[18] Will the cutting mat get scratched after use?
Yes, scratching is normal because the blade contacts the mat during cutting. This does not affect functionality -- scratches are not damage.
The cutting mat is double-sided. When one side has been used sufficiently, you can flip it over and use the other side, effectively doubling its life. When both sides are fully used, contact us to purchase a replacement mat. |

[19] Does MAGIC PRESS work with Chinese and European rubbers?
Yes. The tool works with all rubber types and thicknesses, including Chinese, Japanese and European rubbers. The pressure adjustment system lets you fine-tune the feel to your preference, regardless of the rubber you use.
[20] Is the steel ruler metric or imperial?
The steel ruler has metric graduations only (centimetres and millimetres) for precise pressure reading.
